Recently I came across two studies that I think really highlight the importance of owning your own data and having a strong email marketing strategy. The first study by McKinsey & Company found that email is 40 times more effective in acquiring new customers than Facebook and Twitter combined!   this
Now I have always been a big fan of email marketing so this was good news for me to hear. But what really got me convinced was the next article I read about Facebook reach and engagement rates dropping.


It used to be that only about 14-16% of your Facebook fans would see your postings. Now, according to Jim Tobin, President of Ignite Social Media, the number is more like 3%. That’s right folks, only about 3% of your Facebook fans see what you are posting in their timelines. That means if you have a fan following of about 500 people only 15 people see your postings! By the way, you may have already heard but this number is dropping even more. In some cases reach is as low as 1%.
