It’s Time to Focus
I wanted to take a bit of time to speak a little more in depth about my tip from the live broadcast event. The key to my branding success over the last year or so has been focus. It can be very easy to be distracted by all the different opportunities we have available to us for marketing our businesses. Figuring out where you should spend your time and where to post content can be difficult and spread you thin. And this is an even bigger issue when you hear so many experts tell you that you need to have your business here, there and everywhere.
Listen, I get it. I have been in the social media business for the past 12 years. I have owned my own business going on 9 years now and I have done a LOT in those 12 years. I have a vast knowledge when it comes to social media and content marketing. I embraced being an expert generalist for a long time. I had a podcast, a blog, I posted on every social network, I had a dormant YouTube channel, and quite frankly I moved at a snail’s pace to boost my personal and professional brand.
Andrew & Pete Set the Tone for My 2018 and Beyond
One day in late 2017, my friend and fellow queenie, Amanda Robinson, told me to go check out a YouTube channel by Andrew & Pete. It took one video from Andrew & Pete and I was hooked! I binge watched all their content and decided I had to meet them. So at Social Media Marketing World 2018, I invited them to a dinner I host every year. I even created a custom chatbot to ensure they made the right decision and attend. And they did! From then on we became friends. But more importantly, I hired them to consult me. After some consulting and coaching and a bit of pushing and persuading they convinced me to stop with the squirrel syndrome and FOCUS.
That is when I launched Baby Got Bot on YouTube. I create ’80s inspired Facebook messenger chatbot tutorial videos and post them to Youtube. I took all the energy that I was putting into many things and focused my efforts on one thing. And the results spoke for themselves. I started this journey in April 2018 and by January 2019 I had over 1000 subscribers and thousands of views. But once more, my brand was elevated to new heights. I became known as the chatbot person in many circles and was even asked to speak at three different events in 2018 without even applying to be on stage.
I really knew that things were working when one day I asked a question in the ManyChat Facebook group and someone posted my own Baby Got Bot tutorial as a response to my question…They had not realized I was the same person who created the video.
Focus is Hard But The Rewards are Huge
Truth be told it was really hard to stay focused. I LOVE social media. I LOVE what I do and I LOVE helping people. My audience needs a variety of education and services that I have not been able to deliver as much this past year because I knew I had to stay on the course if I wanted to achieve my goals with the whole Baby Got Bot brand. But at the end of the day, the focus strategy works. Now, this does not mean I don’t do a variety of services for my clients. In fact, 90% of my clients are social media management and consulting clients NOT CHATBOT clients. I do have quite a few inquiries when it comes to chatbots but I have mostly sent that business to referral because my workload simply could not take on the business.
I hope to shift my business in the coming year to be able to hand the chatbot work that is starting to come in. But the point is that you can make money doing a variety of things, but when it comes to your branding it is better to be the go-to expert for one main topic. Focus on creating stellar content for one main platform. You can still share and repurpose your content but 90% of your branding efforts should go to one thing. You should do that one thing so well that it delights people.
Believe it or not, Andrew and Pete actually have a whole talk dedicated to this very strategy. It is the 90-10 rule. You can watch the gist of this rule over in this video they did recently on YouTube
The idea of the 90-10 rule is to do less but achieve more by focusing on creating really great content in one place. When you do this your content is that much better because you are not spread as thin. I had really never thought of my content creation in this way but once I did things really started to take off. Apart from growing my YouTube channel, I built up a Facebook page over 6 months with 600 fans that mostly come from YouTube. I have even grown my Chatbot subscribers and my email address from my YouTube channel as well.
This experience has been awesome and just the top of the iceberg of what is to come now that I have hit some momentum. And that brings me to the other part of this focus strategy. You have to stick with it. And boy is that hard. It has been nearly a year since I started down this path and I have been tempted with the squirrel syndrome several times. Thankfully I have the voices of Andrew and Pete reminding me to stay FOCUSED and on course.
True success takes time. Branding takes time. Growing an audience takes time. Give yourself time to grow and hone your skills, and give your audience time to find you. In the end, the amount of work and time that you dedicate will pay you back tend fold. It will all be worth it in the end.
So what are you going to focus on this year and next? What sets your soul on fire? What do you want to be known for?
