Facebook groups provide an excellent opportunity to expand your network by making business connections, meeting potential customers, and learning from people in your field and others. If you join the right groups, you can become more successful by linking with other like minded people, and growing a strong and wide network. However, it is very important to remember to follow group etiquette when you conduct yourself in these groups because you represent yourself and your business with each action you take.
Here are some tips for how to have excellent group etiquette skills to make sure you get the most out of your time spent on Facebook.
Never add people to your group without permission
This tip is for group owners, and it is one of the most common complaints you will hear about Facebook groups. If you would like somebody to join your group, make sure to send them a message and ask first. Adding people to groups without their permission is rude, and comes off as unprofessional. Avoid annoying potential customers by asking for permission before adding them.
Read the group’s rules
When joining a new group, always make sure to read their rules ASAP. Every group conducts themselves differently, and each group will have their own set of rules. Depending on the group’s purpose, your goals may not line up with their own, and that is perfectly okay. Just make sure to read their rules and guidelines before getting started to avoid potential conflicts. You never know who you might come across again in the future, so represent yourself well!
Lead with value
In a Facebook group, it is important to never simply come out trying to sell your products without providing value to potential customers. People do not join groups to be bombarded with advertisements. They join groups to learn new information, and meet new contacts, so help them do just that. Share your knowledge with the group, and try to learn from them as well.
Serve others first, and be a good group member
This point ties in with the last one. Make sure to join group’s for the right reason. If you simply want to sell your product, use an advertisement because spamming a group will make you seem tacky and unprofessional. Instead, try to build relationships with others where you trust and like each other. Once you have real connections, the sales will come because you will have established yourself as a trustworthy person to conduct business with.
